US telecom titan AT&T on Sunday will flip the switch on a high-speed "next-generation" network for smartphones and other wireless Internet gadgets in five cities.

The Long Term Evolution (LTE) network will begin whizzing data to and from handheld devices for subscribers in Atlanta and Chicago as well as the Texas cities of Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, AT&T told AFP on Friday.

The new network, sometimes referred to as 4G for "fourth-generation," reportedly moves data as much as 10 times faster than its predecessor.

AT&T promised that LTE will launch in 10 more US cities by the end of the year.

The investment in making data flow faster to smartphones comes as telecom carriers compete for subscribers who increasingly turn to mobile devices to access data, services, and communications.
